Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) is thrilled to celebrate this month’s historic and long-awaited passage of the Jose Peralta New York DREAM Act, which extends state-funded college scholarships to thousands of undocumented youth. This helps pave the way for greater economic mobility and guarantee educational access is never a barrier to the American Dream. Passage of this bill is a vital step in protecting our immigrant communities and creating a just and equitable New York for all who live here, regardless of immigration status.

Special thanks to Assemblymember De La Rosa and Senator Sepulveda for sponsoring this important bill, and to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins for their leadership on the issue.

At PPNYC, we believe that everyone deserves access to the resources they need to lead a full, happy, and healthy life — and that includes education. Dreamers — children of immigrants brought here at a young age — are New Yorkers. This is the only home they have ever known. Planned Parenthood of New York City applauds the passage of the DREAM Act in New York, which will help make our state one that is fairer, allows equal opportunity to thrive, and protects and supports immigrants.

Many Planned Parenthood of New York City patients are immigrants of varying status — and we see firsthand the challenges they face in accessing the resources they deserve. With mounting attacks from Washington on our most vulnerable communities, New York should be a beacon of hope and justice.

New York’s passage of the DREAM Act is a critical step in that journey, and we look forward to continuing to work with our partners and legislators to make our state one that is as open, welcoming, and supportive to immigrant communities as possible.
