Planned Parenthood of New York City is thrilled to announce that we are now offering gender-affirming hormone therapy at our Diane L. Max Health Center in Long Island City, Queens! We are so proud to now offer this important service at two of our health centers (we began offering gender-affirming hormone therapy at our Brooklyn health center in 2016). You can call to make an appointment today at 212–965–7000.

So, what exactly is gender-affirming hormone therapy and how does it work? We’re here to break it down for you!

The word transgender is used to describe a person whose biological sex assigned at birth (e.g. genitalia) and gender identity (sense of who they are) are incongruent or do not “match.”

Some transgender people seek to make their gender expression (i.e. how they look) match their gender identity (who they are). Hormone therapy is one way for transgender individuals to feel and look more like the gender with which they identify.

Hormone therapy is a component of a medical transition that is used to change the body’s endocrine system to more closely match the person’s gender identity. Hormone therapy can include testosterone for patients wishing to have a more “masculine” presentation. For patients who desire a more “feminine” presentation, medications that may be prescribed are certain kinds of estrogen and progesterone, as well as testosterone-blocking agents (also known as anti-androgens).

PPNYC offers quality, compassionate hormone therapy to our transgender and gender nonconforming patients using an Informed Consent Model.

When you call us, we’ll schedule an appointment for an initial hormone therapy visit. At this appointment, we will review your medical history, review the informed consent form, and may draw lab tests. Depending on your medical history, we will either prescribe the hormones to you at your first visit or wait to prescribe the hormones until we get your lab results back.

If you are already on hormones, you are able to transfer your hormone care to PPNYC. You will still have to make an appointment for an initial hormone therapy visit so that we can go through our informed consent form with you. Also, please make sure to bring information about your current prescription and dosage to the initial visit.

We have billing staff ready to help you figure out costs and payments for this service for both insured and uninsured patients. If you would like to make an appointment with a Financial Counselor prior to your initial visit, you can do so by calling 212–965–7000.

For our gender-affirming hormone services, we see patients 18 and over. If you are under 18, we can refer you to other New York City providers who can give you hormonal care.

We stand with the transgender and non-binary communities and are proud to provide the compassionate care we are known for, no matter what.
